What are nasolabial fold fillers?
The nasolabial fold is the crease that runs from each side of the nose to the corner of the mouth. Everyone has one; it deepens when the cheek above it loses support and descends, when the bone around the nostril base (the pyriform aperture) recedes, and when the skin itself thins. The fold is therefore a symptom of several changes, and the best correction depends on which dominates. Filling the crease alone can soften it, but filling it heavily flattens the natural contour of the mouth and looks unnatural when you smile.
Our approach treats the fold in three places. A firm gel deep at the base of the nose restores the recessed bone and lifts the top of the fold. A moderate-firmness gel such as Juvederm Volift, Restylane Defyne or Belotero Intense is placed under the fold itself with a cannula, in the deep subcutaneous layer, to soften the shadow. And where the cheek has descended, cheek filler above the fold often reduces the volume needed below it. The fold is the most common site of filler-related vascular complications on the face because the facial artery runs directly beneath it, which is why a cannula, slow injection and anatomical knowledge matter here more than anywhere.
