What are freckles?
Freckles, known medically as ephelides, are small, flat, light-brown spots that cluster on the nose, cheeks, shoulders and forearms. They are not caused by extra pigment cells; the cells are normal in number but respond more strongly to ultraviolet light because of inherited variations in the MC1R gene. That is why freckles appear in childhood, deepen in summer, fade in winter and run in families.
