What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the uneven, dimpled or orange-peel appearance of skin on the thighs, buttocks, hips and sometimes the abdomen and arms. It affects the majority of women after puberty regardless of weight. The structure explains the look: beneath the skin, fat is held in compartments by fibrous bands that run down to the muscle. When fat lobules enlarge or the skin thins and loosens, the bands tether the surface while the fat bulges between them, creating dimples. Oestrogen, genetics, reduced circulation, inactivity and ageing all contribute, which is why cellulite is largely a female pattern and worsens with time.

Cellulite is graded from mild, visible only when the skin is pinched, to severe, with deep dimples visible standing and lying. Weight loss alone often does not improve it and can make loose skin more obvious.

How cellulite is treated at Oaro

At Oaro Dermatology Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul, Dr. Chang-hyun Kim grades the cellulite and separates its three components: fat volume, fibrous tethering and skin laxity. Onda, a microwave device installed at the Cheongdam clinic, heats fat and connective tissue selectively to reduce fat and smooth the surface. Vacumed vacuum therapy improves lymphatic drainage and circulation. Skin laxity is treated with Thermage FLX Body or Densiti radiofrequency, and small stubborn pockets can be reduced with fat-dissolving injections. What to expect

1. Consultation & diagnosis

Your dermatologist examines the areas standing and with the skin pinched, grades the cellulite, photographs it and measures circumference. You receive a written plan combining the devices that fit your grade.

2. Treatment

Onda sessions take 30–45 minutes per area with a warm, deep sensation and no downtime, usually weekly or fortnightly for four to eight rounds. Vacumed is often added before or after. Thermage FLX Body is a single 60–90 minute session under numbing cream. Fat-dissolving injections take about 15 minutes per area.

3. Aftercare & follow-up

You receive English aftercare and guidance on hydration and movement. Photographs and measurements are repeated at each visit, and a maintenance schedule is set in your care notebook.
