Ultherapy vs Shurink Universe: HIFU Lifting Comparison
This is a subtitle for your new post

High-intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU, is one of the most popular non-surgical lifting technologies in Korea. Two names come up again and again: Ultherapy, the long-established device originally developed in the United States, and Shurink Universe, a Korean-made HIFU system that is widely used in local clinics. Both aim to tighten and lift sagging skin without surgery, yet patients often find large differences in price, comfort and the way treatments are described.
This guide explains what the two devices have in common, where they differ, and how to decide which one makes more sense for your face and your trip to Seoul.
What all HIFU treatments share
HIFU devices focus ultrasound energy to small points beneath the skin. At each focal point, the tissue heats briefly to a temperature that causes controlled coagulation, while the surface remains largely untouched. The body treats these points as minor injuries and responds by contracting existing collagen and producing new collagen over the following weeks and months.
Both Ultherapy and Shurink Universe use cartridges or transducers set to specific depths, commonly targeting the deep SMAS layer, the lower dermis and the more superficial dermis. Both are used for the brow, cheeks, jawline, jowls, under the chin and neck.
Ultherapy: key features
- Real-time imaging: Ultherapy displays the tissue layers on screen, allowing the practitioner to check depth and avoid delivering energy over bone or in unsuitable areas.
- Depth options: commonly 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm transducers, with additional options on some systems.
- Recognition: it is one of the most studied focused ultrasound devices, with regulatory clearances in several countries for indications such as brow, neck and under-chin lifting.
- Comfort: often described as quite uncomfortable, particularly at the deeper level and over bony areas.
- Cost structure: typically priced per line, and usually higher than local HIFU devices.
Shurink Universe: key features
- Korean development: Shurink Universe is a newer generation of the Shurink HIFU line and is widely available across Korea.
- Multiple modes: it offers conventional dot-type delivery as well as a micro-pulsed mode designed to deliver energy in smaller, more frequent pulses, which many patients find more comfortable.
- Cartridge variety: different cartridges allow treatment of the face and body at various depths, including shallower settings for areas such as around the eyes in some protocols.
- No imaging in the same way: it generally does not provide the same real-time tissue visualisation as Ultherapy, so the practitioner relies more on anatomy knowledge and technique.
- Cost structure: usually priced per shot, often making larger shot counts more accessible.
Comparing results and recovery
Both devices work on the same principle, so the general pattern of results is similar. Some immediate tightening may be visible, but the main improvement typically builds over two to three months. Many patients describe Ultherapy results as lasting around a year, while some clinics recommend repeating local HIFU devices at somewhat shorter intervals, sometimes every few months to half a year, as part of maintenance. These timelines are general and vary with age, skin thickness and the amount of energy delivered.
Recovery is similar for both. Mild redness, swelling and tenderness are common, and the jaw area may feel sore when chewing for a few days. Bruising, raised welts, temporary numbness and, rarely, nerve irritation can occur with any HIFU device. Results depend heavily on technique: where the energy is placed matters as much as how many shots are fired.
Understanding shot counts
Comparing an Ultherapy quote in lines with a Shurink Universe quote in shots can be confusing, because a line or shot on one device is not equivalent to a line or shot on another. Energy per pulse, depth and pulse pattern all differ. A higher number of shots is not automatically a better treatment, and a lower number is not automatically inadequate.
Instead of comparing numbers alone, ask the clinic to explain which areas will be treated, at which depths, and roughly how the shots will be distributed. A good doctor will adapt the plan to your face rather than applying a fixed package to everyone.
Which should you choose?
- You want imaging-guided precision and a longer interval between sessions: Ultherapy may be the better fit, accepting higher cost and more discomfort.
- You prefer a more comfortable session and regular maintenance: Shurink Universe, especially in micro-pulsed mode, is often chosen for this reason.
- You have a thin face: either device should be used conservatively; ask how the doctor will avoid unwanted volume loss.
- You are interested in both: some patients alternate between devices over the year, or use one for the deep layer and another for shallower tightening. This should be planned by the treating doctor.
Whichever device you choose, ask to confirm that it is genuine, that the cartridge or transducer is authentic and not refilled, and who will perform the treatment. Non-genuine cartridges and unsupervised operators are among the more common concerns in the HIFU market generally.
Who should avoid HIFU
HIFU may not be suitable for people who are pregnant, have open wounds, active acne or infection in the area, certain implants in the treatment zone, or recent fillers and threads that the doctor wishes to avoid. People with very lax skin may see limited benefit and could be better served by surgical consultation.
Conclusion
Ultherapy and Shurink Universe use the same core technology but differ in imaging, delivery modes, comfort and pricing. Ultherapy offers visualised treatment and a long track record, while Shurink Universe offers flexibility, comfort options and accessibility for maintenance. The skill and judgement of the practitioner remain the most important factors in either case.
